So if you are a pizza lover and history fanatic keep reading!

The original Pompeii Oven

Prior to the tragic Vulcanic explosion that hit Pompeii in 79 AC, the city was full of life! Bakeries and restaurants could be found all across town.

These were easy to identify thanks to the large bread and pizza ovens as well as mills. Archaeologists have found approximately 35 bakeries following the tragic events which took place in the city. It is believed that each bakery would supply the local area, as bread was necessary for survival.

Not only were the original Pompeii ovens incredibly grand but also had incredible structure. The fact that they are still standing, and some are still in pristine condition is incredible.

These ovens were mainly built using brick and terracotta, which is why they are so durable.

When it comes to the shape you will find they all have a spherical dome shape, very similar to our modern Pizza ovens.

The dome was usually made of thick bricks which were then covered in mortar, again making them extremely strong and durable.

The modern Pizza Oven

Naples, as many of you may already know, is the birthplace of pizza. Italians, especially from Naples, are extremely proud of the culture and impact pizza and pizza ovens have had throughout the world.

If you ever get the chance to visit the beautiful city of Naples you will notice that the modern pizza oven is really not that much different to its predecessor.

You might find some differences in regard to the material used, but the iconic dome shape remains.

Many authentic Italian restaurants around the world ill have an authentic Pizza oven, and trust us it really does make a difference!
